From Prompt to a Prototype! Building an Artist Income Planner in Under 10 Minutes
The Idea
Artists often ask: “How do I really make a living from my music as an independent artist?”
I decided to build something simple that gives them clarity — a tool that helps them plan and estimate their monthly income based on achievable goals - working in the music industry, we see this issue a lot - where does the money come from? There are so many different revenue streams to explore!
The income should at least combine streaming revenue, gig income, merch sales, and radio plays.
So I asked Chat to give me a prompt to build the above and show an artist how their creative efforts translate into actual numbers.
⚙️ The Build
This project was built in under 10 minutes using Lovable — from a single, well-crafted prompt written with ChatGPT.
I described:
What the tool should do (estimate artist income)
The inputs (streams, gigs, merch, radio)
Default payout rates (Spotify, YouTube, Tidal, BBC Radio 1, etc.)
And a dashboard to visualise the results
Within minutes, I had a mobile-optimised web app that could calculate an artist’s potential monthly income — all from one prompt.
It’s still simple and needs refinement, but it works. And it demonstrates something powerful: how fast ideas can move when we blend creativity with AI.
💡 Improvements?
Here’s what could be improved:
Login and paywall → So artists and managers can save plans and track progress over time.
Merch section upgrade → Let artists add different merch types, calculate profit margins, and even receive recommended price points.
Goal-based insights → Activities or small strategies to help artists boost their streaming numbers.
These refinements would turn the prototype into a standalone micro-service — one that provides genuine value to creators.
⚡ The Power of Vibe Coding
This is “vibe coding” — you describe an idea in natural language, and AI brings it to life visually and functionally.
It’s fast, intuitive, and fun. You don’t need to know how to code; you just need to know what you want to create and how it should feel. You just sit back and watch.
With each iteration, the results get sharper. So it’s less about learning to code, and more about learning to communicate ideas clearly to technology. And guess what? Yep! We have generative AI to do that too!
🚀 Where Else Can This Go?
If we can build a working prototype like this in under ten minutes, what else is possible?
Could we build ourselves a royalty tracking tool that shows when metadata is missing?
Or a festival planner that helps artists balance their bookings and performance revenue?
What about A&R dashboards that combine audience data and creative output into a single view?
The possibilities are endless — and most of them start with one sentence.
